HONOURABLE ADEBISI PROFFERS LASTING SOLUTION TO FRAUDULENT ACTIVITIES IN REAL ESTATE AND HOUSE AGENTS

Regulating fraudulent activities in the real estate sector is crucial for protecting consumers and maintaining the integrity of the market. Speaking on the floor of the House of Assembly, Deputy Chief Whip Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Yusuf Adebisi frowned at the fraudulent activities of the house agents and real estate practitioners have become a serious issue that has created health challenges to tenants.

Lending his view on the motion raised by Hon. Abiodun Babalola and other colleagues on the floor of the Assembly, saying many houses now have two to three agents without the consent of the owners, the agency fee is even higher than the usual house rent fee and a lot terminologies are used by these agents to defend their fraudulent activities.
Hon. Adebisi now advised that there should be a strict licensing requirement for real estate agents, brokers, and developers to ensure that only qualified individuals operate in the market mandate continuing sensitization to keep professionals updated on laws and practices.

Their need to promulgate laws to Strengthen consumer protection specific to real estate transactions and tenants allowing for easy reporting and resolution of fraud-related complaints.
Also, he explained further that there should be full cooperation between government agencies (e.g., real estate commissions, consumer protection agencies, law enforcement) to coordinate efforts in detecting and responding to real estate fraud and share information and best practices across jurisdictions to tackle cross the state fraud schemes.

“We need to establish or empower regulatory bodies responsible for overseeing real estate transactions and enforcing compliance with laws, conduct regular audits and inspections of real estate practices, particularly for developers and property management companies, to ensure compliance with regulations and create accessible and efficient channels for consumers to report suspected fraud and seek redress”.

FUBARA: A MISUNDERSTOOD PATRIOT*. By Randy Igali.

The word patriot is derived from the Greek word “patriots,” which simply mean “of one’s father.” According to the Merriam-Webster, the word entered the English lexicon through the French word “patrite,” which means “fellow countryman.”

In 1912, J. R. Miller, aptly described the situation when patriots are made. According to Miller, times of peace and prosperity are not the best times to make patriots. Patriots are made, when a nation is in peril, at such a time love for country is developed, because it is at such times that there is a call to arms to defend home, altar and flag.

True patriots are actually few today, but Sir Amaopusenibo Siminalayi Fubara the governor of Rivers State is one of them.

Although greatly misunderstood and his intentions misinterpreted and misconceived, for Governor Siminalayi Fubara, there is an inner awakening and a strong true heart of loyalty, the type that at each point compensates for national danger and adversity. This probably is as a result of his strong Christian convictions and his professional calling as an Accountant. These two vocations prepared him to be transparent, and accountable demonstrating uncompromising integrity.

To Governor Fubara, patriotism is loyalty, and each is another. He has always lived the life of a patriot. It was this unwavering, unflinching life of loyalty, support and service, this subservience that endeared him to Chief Nysome Wike, in the first place, and made him the first choice of nomination for the position of the governor of Rivers State immediately after him. Surely, if Chief Wike did not believe in him and trust his intrinsic moral qualities and statesmanship, he would not have committed himself to him and would not have supported him to be the governor of River States just after him.

Although later events might seem to have contradicted such perception for those who are unwilling to study him, Governor Fubara has consistently remained unfazed and true to self in conducting himself as a patriot even at the risk of being misunderstood, maligned and misjudged.

His several decisions have been motivated basically by a true love for his people, and the need to pursue that which will bring the greatest good to the greatest numbers of the citizens of River State.

Born on the 28th day of January, 1975, Sir Siminalayi saw the depravities of his people, he was with them when they were hungry and had none to turn to, he saw the lack of infrastructures, he witnessed the abject poverty and the death of his kinsmen and women who could not access medical care because those cares were not there or the hospitals lack the basic facilities. Fubara was part of them when they had no roads, when militants bombed the common wealth with impunity and disregard to the laws of the land. He actually prayed and waited for the time when he could just be the solution instead of being just part of the solution. And just when destiny and providence beckoned, he was shut out.

At the heart of Governor Fubara is that essential element and cardinal virtue of manliness, a distinguishing true-heartedness; the love for country and his people, a desire to bring prosperity to his people, he desired to see a people who are truly emancipated, and as if assailed by armed enemies, he sees every hindrance to the achievement of his goal as a call to battle, although he realize that here now this battle can no longer be fought with bullets but with ballots to be settled on election days. And so, at each moment, his strongest desire is to reach the people so as to alleviate their negative plights and be a succor to their restlessness.

Governor Fubara believes in the combination of brain and conscience, because he knows that a country without good morals and godliness, is a country doomed. To him, no democratic nation can truly be great, when the politicians are not strong in character and faithful to duty at whatsoever cost. He is therefore a man who can never deny any agreement with anyone. But he will as well not enter into any agreement at the detriment of his own people.

Governor Fubara is willing to give splendid service, strength, security and stability to the people of Rivers State on his personal honour.

He was unwilling to build bird’s nest, which will be swept away by the flood of time. He was willing to walk deftly upon that slim line of political conspirational framework to a potent revolution and transformation of his people and the State.

Indeed, Governor Fubara explored and achieved such a high uniquely superlative plateau, of self-identification, with a history of patriotism and identity. He intelligently guided his ideology of the Rivers State he wants, built by himself after his own heart and for the socio-economic benefits of her own people. This because he loves and what to support his people. He is proud to do so, it brings him at par with the founders of Rivers State, bring to him that sense of unification and joy. This is the clime of exclusivity, the difference that Fubara wanted to make.

Governor Fubara’s patriotism is not that of a nativist or merely nationalist, who perceives every other person outside the proclivity of his tribe as an enemy but he was willing to associate with consequences of his identification with his people.

Indeed, Governor Amaopusenibo Siminalayi Fubara is a misunderstood patriot, whose real intentions is the good of his people of Rivers State, and he is willing to pay any price, even the supreme price to redeem and emancipate the people of Rivers State.

Name Reconciliation Committee Within 14 Days to End Emergency Rule in Rivers - Pro-Democracy Group Begs Tinubu

A pro-democracy group, Coalition of Civil Society in Defence of Democracy, has urged President Bola Tinubu to establish a reconciliation committee within 14 days to resolve the crisis in Rivers State.

This call comes after President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state, suspending Governor Siminilayi Fubara, his deputy, and the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months.

The group's convener, Dr. Olayemi Isaacs, at a press conference in Abuja expressed concerns that the state of emergency would only lead to a "forced peace" and encourage parties to hide their true intentions.

Instead, he advocated for reconciliatory steps in a democratic setting to achieve genuine peace.

According to Dr. Isaacs, genuine peace can only come to Rivers State through reconciliatory steps taken in a truly democratic setting.

The group criticized President Tinubu's decision to declare a state of emergency, stating that it validated the ugly practice of corrupt political godfatherism by siding with former Governor Nyesom Wike, who is the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Tinubu's cabinet.

They argued that Wike's overbearing rent-seeking behavior was the root cause of the crisis in Rivers State.

The Coalition of Civil Society in Defence of Democracy demanded that President Tinubu set up a panel of non-partisan eminent Nigerians to mediate between the rival parties in the Rivers State crisis.

They emphasised that the mediatory efforts must be concluded within 60 days, allowing the state of emergency to be lifted within 90 days of its declaration.

The group warned that allowing the state of emergency to run longer than 90 days would compound the problem in the state, threatening and possibly jeopardizing Nigeria's democracy.

They urged President Tinubu to take immediate action to establish the reconciliation committee and begin the process of resolving the crisis in Rivers State.

“We call on President Bola Tinubu to end the state of emergency he imposed on Rivers State within 90 days of its proclamation,” Isaacs added.

“Allowing it to run longer than this period will compound the problem in the state in a way that will threaten and possibly jeopardize Nigeria’s democracy.

“Furthermore, the Coalition of Civil Society in Defence of Democracy demands that President Tinubu, within 14 days, set up a panel of non-partisan eminent Nigerians to mediate between the rival parties in the Rivers State crisis.

“The mediatory efforts must be concluded within 60 days so that the state of emergency can be lifted within 90 days of its declaration.

“Finally, we call on political parties to rein in their members in states that have similar political wranglings ongoing so that President Tinubu would not have the excuse to suspend democratic structures in more parts of the country.

“Where political parties fail to heed this counsel, they can be assured that there will not be many states left under democratic rule before the 2027 General Elections.”

Zamfara: Coalition Decries Alleged Anti-Democratic Actions By Gov Lawal, Lawlessness Against Assembly Members*

A coalition, the Centre for Democracy and Development, has condemned the alleged anti-democratic actions of Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, and his administration's lawlessness against members of the House of Assembly.

The group, in a press conference held in Abuja, called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Zamfara State for a minimum of six months.

According to its convener, Ibrahim Yakubu, Governor Lawal's actions have plunged the state into economic sabotage, anarchy, and instability.

The group cited the suspension of 10 members of the Zamfara State House of Assembly for 13 months, simply for expressing concerns about the state's security situation.

This, the coalition argued, has crippled the legislative chamber and denied the people of Zamfara effective representation.

The coalition also accused Governor Lawal of authoritarianism, citing his directive to suspend eight members of the House who raised concerns about the worsening security crisis. The group described this as a clear abuse of power and an attack on democracy.

Furthermore, the coalition condemned Governor Lawal's alleged complicity in illegal mining activities in the state, which has led to the exploitation of Zamfara's gold reserves.

“In light of these hideous violations, It is time for President Bola Tinubu to take action before it is too late. A state of emergency must be declared in Zamfara now,” the statement added.

“A six-month emergency period is necessary to restore order, dismantle the networks of political and economic terrorists, and pave the way for a return to democratic governance.

“This is not a call made lightly; it is a demand born out of necessity, as the current trajectory threatens not only Zamfara but the entire nation. The good people of Zamfara deserve leadership that upholds the rule of law, prioritizes security, and safeguards national resources.

“Additionally, We implore Mr. President to use every resource and tool at his disposal to handle the crisis in Zamfara.

“The federal government must take swift action in order to secure the state resources, defend people’s lives and livelihoods, and hold those culpable for the current situation accountable. The time for Half-measures and false promises are no longer an option; strong, quick action is now required.

“It is evident that Governor Dauda Lawal’s tenure has been an unmitigated disaster, a relentless assault on democracy, a blatant disregard for the rule of law, and a shocking indifference to the suffering of the people he was elected to serve.

“He has desecrated democratic institutions, fostered political terrorism, refused to tackle insecurity, and enabled the looting of Zamfara’s wealth. No doubt, he has failed in his responsibilities, and he can no longer remain in office. Nigeria deserves better.”

State of Emergency: Reps Refute $5,000 Inducement Allegation

The House of Representatives has vehemently denied allegations that its members received a $5,000 inducement to ratify President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's request for a State of Emergency declaration in Rivers State.

Deputy spokesman of the House, Hon. Philip Agbese (Benue, APC), in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Saturday, described the allegation as false, malicious and emanating from "the pit of hell."

Hon. Agbese said Thursday's resolution of the House on the State of Emergency declaration in Rivers was done out of patriotism and in the interest of restoring lasting peace to River State.

"At no point did members of the House engage in any financial inducement about the state of emergency declaration. The decision was taken after extensive deliberations on the security and political situation in Rivers State, in line with our constitutional responsibilities to safeguard national stability," he said.

"Any suggestion that lawmakers were bribed is pure fiction, designed to serve the interests of those who seek to distort facts and create unnecessary tension in the country. The House of Representatives remains an independent institution guided by democratic principles, the rule of law, and the collective will of the Nigerian people.

"Our duty is to make decisions that align with the national interest, not to succumb to baseless distractions aimed at eroding public trust. The allegations of bribery are a desperate attempt to discredit the House and must be dismissed as the political comedy that it is".

Agbese drew parallels with King Solomon's wisdom, citing the biblical story of the two women disputing a child's parentage (1 Kings 3:16-28).

"What the President did was like what King Solomon did when the two women who were fighting over the propriety of a child came to him. These people in Rivers are all interested in the progress and development of Rivers State," he added.

"They love the state, and they are working hard for it. But one way or the other, disagreement arose between the parties which escalated, and Mr. President, in his wisdom, decided to impose a state of emergency, for some time to allow the two parties to come together, to further deepen our democracy."

He said as members of Parliament interested in the peace and well-being of the people of Rivers State, they approved the State of Emergency declaration in Rivers out of patriotism and not for any pecuniary consideration as being alleged.

Agbese noted that the Parliament in its wisdom made some key adjustments to Mr President's emergency proclamation before ratifying it.

"One is that the Parliament remains the law-making body as far as the country is concerned. We resolved that the National Assembly would take over the legislative duties of the Rivers Assembly within the period that the state of emergency is enforced," he stated.

"Secondly, we resolved as a Parliament that it must not necessarily be for six months for the parties to come together and resolve. Even if it is within two weeks, that these parties can resolve their differences and show that they are on the same page, Mr. President, in his wisdom, should also reduce 180 days."

Hon. Agbese said he believes that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as a true democrat, will not work against democratic institutions in the country.

"We know Mr. President very well. He is a Democrat. He has fought for the institution of our democracy as far as Nigeria is concerned. And he is one man who would always want to protect this democracy.

"We have been relating with him as the President of the country for the past almost two years now. We have been relating with him as our President. We have seen his concerns.

"The 10th House of Representatives has seen the genuine concerns and we believe and trust that if these issues are resolved in less than six months, Mr. President is going to put an end to the state of emergency in that state."

Hon. Agbese said the House in its wisdom, equally resolved that a tri-partite committee of comprising eminent Nigerians, members of the Parliament and members of the Executive Council at the other end be constituted to ensure that the warring groups in Rivers State are brought to a roundtable and an amicable resolution is reached.

Agbese, while disabusing the minds of Nigerians over the allegations of inducements of members, blamed "fifth columnists" and oppositions, whom he said, are out to tarnish the image of the parliament.

The Benue lawmaker urged Nigerians to continue to extend the kind of support they have always extended to them, assuring that they will always work in the people's interest as 'Peoples' House'.

He expressed optimism that at the end of the State of Emergency, the Rivers State government and the Rivers Assembly will bounce back stronger for the overall good and progress of the state.

On the controversy over quorum, Hon. Agbese said the House satisfied the requirement of quorum with 243 members in attendance during the exercise.

Rivers: Nigerians Will Hold Wike, Fubara Responsible if Peace Pact Not Signed Within 90 Days - Coalition

The Coalition for Democracy and Development (CDD) has issued a stern warning to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Governor Siminalayi Fubara, urging them to put aside their differences and sign a new peace pact within the next 90 days.

The CDD condemned the actions of both Wike and Fubara, stating that their pursuit of selfish interests has prioritised personal gains over the welfare of the people.

The political crisis in Rivers State has been escalating, culminating in President Bola Tinubu's declaration of a state of emergency and the suspension of Governor Fubara and other elected officials.

Despite a previous peace pact signed in December 2023, the crisis has continued to worsen.

In a statement signed by Dr. George Ifure, the CDD emphasised that the ongoing crisis is a clear indication of the failure of leadership and the pursuit of selfish interests by both Wike and Fubara.

Ifure warned that Nigerians are ready to hold them responsible if they fail to sign a peace pact within the stipulated timeframe.

To resolve the crisis, the CDD also called on President Tinubu and the National Assembly to establish a committee comprising eminent Nigerians who can mediate and find a lasting solution.

They urged all stakeholders to work towards finding a peaceful and democratic solution to the crisis in Rivers State.

"We call on Wike and Governor Fubara to put aside their differences and work towards signing a new peace pact within the next 90 days. We urge them to prioritize the interests of the people and find a lasting solution to the crisis," the statement added.

"We warn Wike and Fubara that Nigerians are ready to hold them responsible if they fail to sign a peace pact within the stipulated timeframe. The CDD calls on President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to name a committee for the resolution of the Rivers State political crisis.

"We urge President Bola Tinubu to make history with the way he handles the Rivers State crisis. This is a pivotal moment that requires bold and visionary leadership.

"We implore him to focus on the welfare and interests of the Nigerian people, to listen to their voices, and to work towards a peaceful and democratic resolution that will restore democratic governance in Rivers State.

"We urge the two parties to embrace peace and ensure there is an immediate resolution to the crisis. The CDD believes that a peaceful resolution to the crisis is necessary to restore democratic governance in Rivers State.

"We urge all stakeholders to work towards finding a peaceful and democratic solution to the crisis in Rivers State."

She noted that the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development, which serves as the global review platform for the SDGs, will convene in July 2025, where Nigeria will present its third VNR report alongside 38 other countries.

Welcoming delegates to the forum, the Special Adviser to the Governor on SDGs, Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih, commended OSSAP-SDGs for convening the dialogue, stressing the pivotal role of subnational governments in translating the SDGs into practical, local implementation.

She stressed that as Nigeria moves closer to the 2030 deadline, the 2025 VNR consultation provides an excellent platform to re-evaluate progress, identify bottlenecks, and co-create scalable solutions for accelerating SDG implementation at both national and subnational levels.

While noting that Lagos State has remained a frontrunner in data-driven governance and policy innovation, the Special Adviser revealed that the present administration in the state has institutionalized mechanisms to ensure that development policies and interventions are data-driven, evidence-based, and impactful.

“Lagos State’s 2023 Voluntary Local Review (VLR) has significantly influenced policy formulation, resource allocation, and inter-agency collaboration.

It has provided a framework for tracking our SDG progress and strengthening participatory governance, aligning our state policies with global development targets,” Dr. Finnih remarked.

She further reiterated the transformational role of periodic assessments, such as the VNR and VLR, in advancing sustainable development, stating that they enable governments to adopt responsive, transparent, and inclusive strategies to meet their SDG commitments effectively.

Dr. Finnih encouraged government institutions, private sector leaders, development partners, and civil society actors to contribute their insights and expertise to shape a more inclusive and results-driven VNR, noting that the national review is not just a formality, but a true reflection of the progress, challenges, and solutions needed to fast-track the SDGs.

She appreciated the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs for its leadership and commitment to fostering a national dialogue and driving initiatives that aligned with the aspirations of the SDGs.

During the consultation, participants reviewed Nigeria’s 2024 SDG Progress Report, analyzed institutional frameworks, and discussed challenges and key recommendations to enhance implementation at all levels.

The discussions also focused on leveraging public-private partnerships, innovative financing, and digital technology to fast-track progress in critical areas such as poverty reduction, quality education, gender equality, and climate action.

The regional consultation in Lagos marks the beginning of a nationwide engagement series, with subsequent discussions scheduled to take place in Uyo (South-South), Enugu (South-East), Gombe (North-East), Kaduna (North-West), and Abuja (North-Central), culminating in a National Validation Summit in the Federal Capital Territory.
