Angry 120 SARS Operatives Prepare To Leave Lagos Command

Not less than 120 operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Ikeja, Lagos State Police Command, have applied to be transferred out of the unit, a source disclosed yesterday. The panic transfer moves came on the heels of a signal received from Force Headquarters, Abuja, from the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on Thursday, stating new laws and orders as the determination to overhaul SARS gathers momentum. The police source disclosed that at least 120 SARS operatives had applied for transfer from the unit, stressing that to remain was really a “suicide mission.”

A police wireless message sent to different commands across the nation, which was made available to our correspondent, revealed that SARS operatives, with immediate effect, “should desist from wearing FSARS/SARS black uniforms or any other dress earlier approved. “Accordingly, all personnel must wear normal police uniforms, displaying clearly their name tags, force numbers in the case of the rank and files, police identification tags, pending IGP’s determination of their operational dress code. “The IGP further directs that any officer who flouts this directive will be severely sanctioned, while supervising officers under whom this order is flouted will be held liable.

Treat as very important please.” To further underscore Idris’s instruction, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Edgal Imohimi, ordered all policemen under his watch to immediately be on police uniform. This includes operatives of X-squad and monitoring units. Another police source said: “Majority of the SARS men have chosen to leave the SARS’ unit. The application asking to be transferred is called demobbing. It is allowed in police.

These SARS men said it wouldn’t be easy for them to chase after armed robbers and kidnappers while in full police uniform. “It will make them become easy target for these criminals. They called it a suicide mission. Nobody wants to die. They have wives and children. If they are killed by armed robbers, nobody cares for their wives or children.”

A Nigerian man identified as Friday Uko, has been sentenced to death by hanging for killing his pregnant wife, Patience Uko.

The Nigerian who reportedly pushed his 3-month-old pregnant wife, Patience, on the 14th August, 2014, because she took N1000 from his pocket and used it to cook food for their seven children, was handed the death sentence by an Akwa Ibom State High Court, sitting in Ikot Ekpene after Justice Ntong Ntong found him guilty of the crime.

Justice Ntong who stated that the instant death of Patience showed the intention to kill and the force the husband exerted in pushing his wife down, expressed displeasure that a pregnant wife who should have been pampered and cared for by her husband was killed by the same man.

“The accused pushed his wife down having known that she was pregnant and that he ought to know that a pregnant woman ought to be pampered and treated with love and not violence.

“The case is straightforward and that the accused had told the court through his extrajudicial statement that he caused the death of his wife by kicking her because of misunderstanding over N1,000. Anyone who unlawfully kills another is entitled to face the law,” the judge held.

While the convict whose lawyer was not available to defend him pleaded for mercy to enable him go home and take care of his children, the Judge held on to Uko being hanged until he his confirmed dead.

756,000 PVCs Yet To Be Claimed In Oyo State, Says REC

The Oyo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mutiu Agboke, has revealed that a total number of 756,000 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) are yet to be claimed by their owners in the state.

The REC after announcing the figure then appealed to owners of the PVCs to visit the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) offices close to them to collect their PVC before the August 17 deadline.

Agboke made the appeal during a visit to the office of Governor Abiola Ajimobi, in Ibadan, the state capital.

The REC said that the commission was concerned that the huge number of PVCs remained unclaimed ahead of the 2019 general election.

“We have been reaching out to major stakeholders in the state, such as traditional rulers and the House of Assembly lawmakers, among others, in our bid to ensure a successful general election next year.

“We are not pleased that we still have 756,000 PVCs yet to be claimed by their owners. This is why we are appealing to the owners of these cards to visit our offices across the state to collect their PVC,” he said.

Ajimobi in response said the state government would declare work-free hours for workers across the state to collect their PVCs in the last week of the registration exercise.

“We will do everything humanly possible to encourage our people to collect their PVCs before the general election, including declaring work-free hours for civil servants in the last week of the voter registration exercise.

“When you say our people are not collecting their PVCs and they are also complaining of not meeting INEC staff at the designated centres or that the machines are not working properly, then you need to look into this.

“We have to look into ways of addressing these issues. We have informed local government chairmen to mobilise and make the exercise easy for the people. This must necessarily be done in conjunction with INEC officials.”

Ajimobi also urged the REC to ensure that the 2019 election was free and fair by putting up a system that would engender trust among the stakeholders.

Falana Warns APC Against Alleged Plan To Impeach Saraki

A new outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo is believed to have killed 33 people in the east of the country, the health ministry said on Saturday.

Thirteen Ebola cases have been confirmed since the fresh outbreak was declared on August 1 in North Kivu province.

While just three of the fatalities have been among the 13 confirmed cases, the death toll is believed to have risen to 33, the health authorities said in a bulletin on Saturday.

Containing an Ebola outbreak in a “war zone” in the Democratic Republic of Congo is among the most difficult challenges the World Health Organisation has faced, a top WHO official said on Friday.

In North Kivu, health workers will have to navigate their response among more than 100 armed groups, 20 of whom are “highly active,” WHO’s emergency response chief Peter Salama told reporters.

The outbreak in North Kivu in eastern DRC was declared a week after WHO and the Kinshasa government hailed the end of an earlier Ebola flareup in northwestern Equateur province, which killed 33 people.

As with the earlier outbreak,”vaccinations will be an integral part of the response,” the health ministry said Saturday.

The latest outbreak of the haemorrhagic virus is the 10th in the DRC since 1976, when it was discovered in the north of the country, then called Zaire, and named after a river nearby.

In Geneva, the World Health Organization said most of the new cases were recorded in the district of Mangina, 30 kilometres (18 miles) from the city of Beni.

“This is an active conflict zone. The major barrier will be safely accessing the affected population,” the WHO said.

One of the world’s most feared diseases, Ebola is a virus-caused haemorrhagic fever that in extreme cases causes fatal bleeding from internal organs, the mouth, eyes or ears.

It has a natural host in a species of tropical African fruit bats, from which it is believed to leap to humans who kill and butcher the animals for food.

In the worst outbreak of Ebola, the disease struck the West African states of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone in 2013-15, killing more than 11,300 people.

The DRC authorities were alerted to the recent outbreak by the death of a 65-year-old woman in Mangina in late July.

After she was buried members of her family began to display symptoms of the virus “and seven of them have died,” the ministry said Saturday.

Probable Ebola cases have also been registered in neighbouring Ituri province.

While insisting that all means available were being used to stop the latest outbreak, Doctor Ndjoloko Tambwe Bathe, who is heading the fight against the virus, told the UN’s news website Okapi that “we can not tell you whether we are making good progress or not”.

I Don’t Own Gas Station, Event Centre, Dapo Lam-Adesina Cries Out

Hon. Dapo Lam Adesina
Hon. Adedapo Lam Adesina, the member of the House of Representatives, representing Ibadan North East/South East federal constituency has denied the rumour making the rounds that he owns a Gas Company and Event Center.

The youthful lawmaker said that he does not own a Gas Company or Event Center anywhere in Ibadan or any other part of the country as being circulated by some people.

There have been rumours in town that the lawmaker owns a popular Gas Station and an Event Center.

Hon. Lam Adesina, while reacting through his Media Office described the allegation as unfounded and the handiwork of elements who are hell bent on discrediting his good name just for political reasons as he has not acquired any property since he was elected in 2015.

Saying that he won’t allow anybody to tarnish his image, Omo Oloore stated that whoever has proof or evidence about any acquired property anywhere, apart from his house in Ibadan should come forward or send petition to the appropriate government authorities or agencies.

Hon. Lam Adesina noted that he believed that the move and speculation is the handiwork of some politicians to engage in reckless blackmail to implicate him as a fraudulent politician. He added that he could not be caught unaware because he is more familiar with the game, particularly when election period is getting closer.

Omo Oloore, while urging the good people of his constituency, Ibadan North East/South East federal constituency and Oyo State in general to be wary of do or die politicians who are only hell bent on wanting to implicate him in order to score cheap political points, warned rumour mongers to desist from such act so as not to experience the wrath of God.

He assured the good people of his constituency to remain calm, particularly in this period of trial, as everything is under control.

Five dead, three injured as suicide bombers attack Maiduguri suburb

Five suspected Boko Haram suicide bombers on Sunday night sneaked into a neighbourhood of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, to carry out attacks that eventually claimed only their own lives, officials and witnesses said.

The blasts, however, injured three other residents.

Multiple deafening explosions, a first of its kind to be heard by residents in recent times, echoed all over Maiduguri at about 7 p.m. causing panic among residents.

Our reporters gathered that the multiple blasts came from Kalari, a crowded Maiduguri suburb located behind the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital.

Witnesses said the suicide bombers were five, comprising two males and three teenage girls, who walked to one of the houses near Kalari market and knocked at the gate, pretending to be visitors.

“When the owner of the house opened the gate, the teenage girl detonated the bomb she was wearing in her body but it only killed her and injured three other persons,” said Biliya Kabiru, a resident of Kaleri.

“The other suicide bombers, who were probably scared by the pandemonium generated by the first blast had to quickly detonate their suicide vests, but at various spots where no one was affected but only themselves,” the source added.

The spokesman of the Civilian-JTF, said “It was a sad incident, but we thank God none of the innocent residents lost their lives except the suicide bombers themselves”, he said.

“They were five suicide bombers that invaded Kalari; comprising an old man and a boy of about 12 years old and three teenage girls. But the explosions they caused only injured three persons – two by the walls that the explosion brought down and a woman. In a makeshift house near the attacked spot. All of the injured are currently receiving treatment at the hospital,” he said.

Kaleri is one of locations within Maiduguri that used to be a den of Boko Haram members.

There is still belief among residents that the area still harbours a large number of Boko Haram members or their passive supporters.

It was in the same Kalari that 22 Boko Haram suspects were arrested including eight who confessed to have participated in the abduction of Chibok schoolgirls in 2014.

116 Nigerians trapped in Libya slave camps — Presidential Aide

Some 116 of the Nigerian migrants trapped in Libya slave camps would be repatriated home soon, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has said.

Mrs Dabiri-Erewa said this in a statement by her media aide, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, on Sunday in Abuja.

She said the Federal Government and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) have located the detention camps of the Nigerians, and offered to bring those willing back home.

The Nigeria Mission in Tripoli, she said, had traced the migrants to Osama Detention Centre, Zawiya, Libya.

According to her, 116 Nigerian migrants have been processed online by the Nigeria Mission and IOM for repatriation back to Nigeria.

However, 24 of them insisted they must get to Europe.

She said that Federal Government moved to rescue the detained migrants after their plea for assistance through video clip from Libya on July 8.

In the video, the stranded Nigerians who veiled their faces, said that their final destination is Europe but were intercepted by security agents in Libya and locked up under dehumanising conditions.

The migrants had in the video said they were being tortured to death daily under a dehumanising condition.

“We are dying here. Come and rescue us. Europe is our final destination but we are trapped in Libya subjecting us to inhuman treatment”, one of the Nigerians said in the video.

Mrs Dabiri-Erewa said that 9,438 Nigerian migrants had so far been repatriated by the Federal Government and the IOM.

She gave assurance that President Muhammadu Buhari would continue to ensure that all stranded migrants willing to return home are brought back.

President Muhammadu Buhari early this year directed immediate evacuation of Nigerians from Libya.

According to her, those that have been brought back are being profiled and enrolled in various technical and vocational training centres with relevant agencies and NGOs.

She appealed to Nigerian youths to avail themselves the opportunities in the country as against risking their lives to search for a non-existing and deadly greener pastures abroad. (NAN)

5 Proven Reasons Why Employers Are Rejecting Your CV Without Even Reading It

How long have you been job searching? How many CVs have you sent without hearing back from the employer?

The questions on your mind now would probably be “What is wrong with my CV?” “Is my CV being seen?” “Am I less qualified for all jobs I apply for?”

I sat down with Ms. Muthoni Ndegwa a Recruitment Manager at Corporate Staffing to shed more light on why employers reject CVs without even reading them.

At the end of the day, it could be that you are qualified for a job, but your CV is a total turn off. Here is how;

1. You don’t name your CV appropriately
According to Ms Ndegwa, a majority of CVs fail to get the employer’s approval because of how they are saved.

Think about it; if an employer is receiving thousands of applications on a single position with no proper naming, how are they going to keep track of all the CVs?

To be on the safe side, name your CV accordingly. For this she recommends that you name your CV by your first and last name.

“This will give the recruiter an easier time when short listing and even keep track of all the applicants,” she says.

For instance, you could name your CV as ‘Lilian Wamaitha CV’ or ‘WamaithaCV’.

It’s that simple.

2. Sending your CV as a “forward”
I am not a recruiter but I have had so many of our readers send their CVs to me for a job.

However, the problem is not sending the CV but how you send it.

If you are in the habit of forwarding your CV and I mean from the last one your sent, I am here to tell you that this is one of the mistakes that recruiters don’t forgive easily.

It not only shows a lack of focus but it brings you out as lazy.

I mean, how simple is it to create a completely new email when applying for a job?

3. Sending your CV accompanied by lots of attachments
Often employers have about 7 seconds to scan through your application to determine if they will shortlist you for a job.

One of the mistakes that job seekers make is sending so many attachments for a single job application. This will include a CV, cover letter, all their certificates and some even take it to the extreme by attaching their birth certificate as well as health records.

Go through the job description and note what the employer wants. If they say send your CV only, kindly do not send a cover letter along. If they say to email your applications, a CV and a cover letter will do.

Avoid attaching your certificates when applying for a job unless the employer has specifically asked you to.

Chances are, they will tell you to bring the other documents along when they shortlist you for an interview?

What does this means then? It means that your CV should be comprehensive enough and tailored towards the job you are applying for.

4. Saving your CV In the wrong format
Word and PDF format should be the only systems to use when sending your CV to potential employers. Avoid sending your CV then saving it in a format that cannot be accessible.

The end result? Employers will not get a chance to have a look at it and it is your entire fault.

“I have had applicants sending CVs by sharing it on Google docs where I have to have permission to view the file, something which is impossible,” says Ms Ndegwa.

To be on the safe side, just save it as a word document since it’s the easiest.

5. Your CV is too long
The length of your CV depends on your working experience but having a very long CV runs the risk of an employer discarding it before getting a chance to read it.

You can’t have 2 years experience and afford to write a 10 page CV. The recruiter has 100 more CVs to shortlist so chances are that your 10 page document will be rejected. An employer will simply move on to the next, more shorter and organized CV.

In this competitive job market, applying for a job and getting invited for an interview is quite a big challenge. However, if you stay away from these mistakes, you will increase the chances of a recruiter considering your CV for a job offer.

Oyo Govt Ejects Illegal Occupants At State-owned Ajoda Estate

The Oyo State government has ejected some illegal occupants of the state-owned Ajoda Estate, situated in Egbeda Local Government area of the state.

Those ejected were found guilty of offences ranging from illegally staying in the government-owned property for between five and eight years to subletting some the vacant apartments to unsuspecting members of the public.

Acting Director, Oyo State Housing Corporation, Mr Samuel Adekunle, last Thursday, led the taskforce for the ejection.

He said the action was sequel to several complaints by the original allotees of the flats alleging takeover of their properties by other persons.

Prior to the action, Adekunle explained that the illegal occupants had failed to yield the corporation’s vacation orders.

He, subsequently, assured of continuation of the exercise, warning that those who fail to vacate as directed could face prosecution.

“We have given most of the houses in the estate to our allottees but most of them are not resident in Ibadan. We have visited the estate severally but could not eject them, believing the original owners allowed them stay there.

“It was recently that the owners came to complain that some people illegally occupied their flats illegally,” Adekunle said

Ooni Ogunwusi while addressing the mammoth crowd at the festival narrated that a deity called "Oreluere" who was one of the 401 deities sent by God(Olodumare) to establish the world was the first hunter on the planet earth that planted yam before Oduduwa supported him to make on it a success.

The African foremost monarch acknowledged that God had provided all different necessary foods for sustainability of humanity and annual germination and growth of yam for human consumption.

The Spiritual father of Yoruba race worldwide observed that the process of originality of yam production emanated from the cradle of Yoruba's, (Ile-Ife) emphasising that yam is one of the foods with high carbohydrate that gives energy to the generality.

He stated that Oduduwa collaborated with other deities on how yearly plantation would be guaranteed. He added that "Owo" dynasty also value the celebration yearly maintaining Yam Festival is a very big event across yam belt in the world, saying Yoruba cultural heritage is very keen to this.

"I charge all other neighbouring towns especially Yorubas to emulate the ancient city of Ile-Ife in making the event a continuous exercise."

"Our youths must go into hufe commercial farming as Yoruba communities are known as producers of yam for the entire world." Ooni charged

Ooni Ogunwusicontinued
"This belt is called yam belt and these yam belts produce 70% yam for national consumption, while others shared the remaining 30%.

"The plantation started from kingdom of Ife to middle belt of Nigeria straight to Central African Republic and other West African down to Southern Africa.

"Individual has his own capability and strength for production and Yorubas have mastered it and become the experts in yam production." Ooni explained.

The Co-Chairman of National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria added that the past heroes had suffered for the sustainability of human race, therefore, urged people to crown their efforts in appreciating them by embracing farming."

Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede, congratulated Ooni Ogunwusi on the 2018 yam festival, commending him for promoting culture and tradition of Yoruba race globally.

Ogunbodede said that the festival has exposed all to international community, saying people prefers the celebration for it has attracted a lot of visitors not to Ile-Ife alone but to other Yoruba communities.

He added that celebration of yam festival added values to economic benefit of the nation as it will encourage farming and community development.

The Vice-Chancellor appealed to the three tiers of government to ensure improvement of storage facilities of agricultural produce for adequate safety for human consumption.

He called on government to provide infrastructures such as electricity, portable water and good roads for smooth transportation of farm produce from farms to the cities for more patronage.

Ogunbodede lauded Ooni for putting all efforts in maintaining peaceful coexistence on campus of Obafemi Awolowo University and Ile-Ife in general.

"The relative peace we are enjoying in Obafemi Awolowo University Community is the handiwork of God who used Ooni Ogunwusi. As we are enjoying him in Ife and Yoruba land at large, the entire nation are also enjoying him because of his "peace mantra."
Baba Ooni Adeyeye Ogunwusi is always giving us a tremendous support"

"He has severally organised for people from Brazil, Portugal, and Cuba to come to Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife to learn African languages. I here pledge that the school management would not dissapoint him." Ogunbodede said

APC Suspends Senator Shehu Sani ; Party Demands Apology From Him Due To His Mis-Conduct

Shehu Sani, the Senator representing Kaduna Central in the National Assembly, has been suspended by All Progressives Congress.

The Senator was suspended in the Tudun-Wada North chapter of the party. In a statement signed by its chairman, Ibrahim Salisu Togo, Tudun-Wada North chapter of the APC insisted that their decision was based on the constitution of the party. The statement reads, “We, the Tudun Wada North (Ward 6) Exco of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Kaduna South Local Government Area wish to affirm our decision on the indefinite suspension of Senator Shehu Sani.

“This affirmation was informed by the need for updating the general public and the good people of Kaduna State regarding our collective resolve.
“We make bold to say.that our decision was based on the provisions of the constitution of our great party. Therefore, Senator Shehu Sani remains suspended.

In all fairness to the party and Kaduna State voters, the only pre-condition for lining this suspension on Senator Shehu Sani is for the lawmaker to openly apologize to the leadership of our great party for his various acts of misconduct and disrespectful attitudes towards both his constituents, party leadership and his vicious media attacks against our amiable President, Muhammadu Buhari.

“He should also apologize to the Government and people of Kaduna State for frustrating the $350 million loan meant to develop the State in the areas of Education. Healthcare delivery, Works and Housing, Women and Youth Empowerment among others.

“We cannot justify the pain to which the disappointed voters of Kaduna State have been subjected by the Senator’s uncooperative and selfish attitude over the World Bank loan.

“We wish to also seize this opportunity to stress our allegiance and respect for the leadership of our great party at all levels. We also identify fully with the developmental strides of Governor Nasir El-Rufai-led administration in many areas, especially infrastructure.”
